The founder of The Chandos
welcoming local residents to an event in May 2013,
that saw the planting of a decease-resistant elm
to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The Brockley Society was formed in 1974 to protect the charming yellow London brick character of its Victorian terraced houses.
In 2011, the society decided to appoint wardens to consider the tree stock that is just as vital in giving the area its special appeal.
The Chandos Foundation was involved from the beginning and has pushed for the society to work towards specific goals:
Increasing local resident’s awareness of the importance of local trees and the real threats to their survival.
Building a cooperative and understanding relationship with local government and other relevant amenities groups.
Finding the funding to enable this work.
Planting large numbers of new trees to replenish the depleted stock.
Increase participation by residents in safeguarding the natural and social environment, as a key requisite of a flourishing democracy.
